This week we are gathering supplies and picking fabric. There are so many options with this pattern! The pattern comes in two versions, one using yardage and a scrappy one using fat quarters. If you aren’t sure which version you want to do, I created some sample mock-ups below and you can check out #LavaBloomsQuilt and the Lava Blooms blog post for inspiration!
Yardage Versions
If you’re planning to make the yardage version of this quilt, you’ll need 5 coordinating fabrics plus the background fabric. I suggest picking 2 color families that work well together, then add multiple shades within those color families and add a color that either pops or adds more contrast to stand out. In my original Lava Blooms cover quilt, I chose pinks/reds and blues and had the Sienna Brick be the pop of color.
Scrappy Fat Quarter Versions
If you’re planning to make the scrappy version of this quilt, this could be great time to shop your stash and use that fat quarter bundle you’ve been saving! Or, I recommend choosing one of the following:
Choose 12 coordinating fat quarters either within the same color family or with 2 or 3 color families that complement each other. Combine prints and textures for added interest!
Choose a fat quarter bundle from the same collection. These colors and/or prints were designed to go together. You can’t go wrong!
Supplies Needed
The Lava Blooms quilt pattern, both a PDF and Paper copy are available in my shop!
Fabric as required by the pattern and size you choose to make. We are doing the throw size for the sew along (See the fabric requirements below.)
Basic quilting supplies (sewing machine, thread, cutting mat and rotary cutter, iron, and acrylic rulers).
The pattern comes with a coloring page, but if you need extra, you can download it here. I’ve also created a digital mock-up on Canva and you can find the pattern on Quiltink.
Quilt Kits
I’ve partnered with some of my favorite shops to bring you a variety of quilt kits! Some scrappy, some yardage, all beautiful!
I think pre-washing is a personal preference. I usually don’t pre-wash my fabric because it takes extra time, extra pressing, and I like the crinkle. With that being said, the only time I do pre-wash my fabric is if I’m working with really saturated colors that I think might bleed onto lighter fabrics.
My Fabric Pull
I decided to go fresh and bright with my fabric pull! All fabrics are AGF Pure Solids and I chose the most beautiful print from Maureen Cracknell’s Gloria Collection! I have a small number of kits for this version in my shop and there’s an option to add the backing fabric!
To be eligible for this week’s prize, post a photo to Instagram of your fabric pull by 8pm PST on January 23rd and use the hashtag #LavaBloomsQuiltSA in your caption! A winner will be randomly chosen on January 24th! Remember that your account must be public to participate.
I can't wait to see your fabric pulls!
