This week we are making all our Flying Geese! These are the last sub blocks we have left before putting our Lava Blooms Blocks together! If you are just joining in, check out the original post that goes over all the sew along details or one of the previous weeks below:
In this pattern we are making our Flying Geese 4 at a time. Sometimes this method is called the No Waste Method, but that’s not the case with these because the squares are a bit oversized to give you room for trimming! I still recommend sewing them with a scant 1/4″ seam allowance.
Marking Your Fabric: As I mentioned last week, there are several ways to mark your fabric. I either use a fabric pencil (for bigger blocks) or diagonal seam tape. Check out last week’s post for more info on the diagonal seam tape.
TIP: Instead of lining up your smaller squares exactly to the edges of your larger square, place them a few threads away from the edge. This will help give you more room for trimming at the top of your Flying Geese block.
Trimming Flying Geese: I’ve tried a few methods to trim Flying Geese, but my favorite one so far is using the Creative Grids Ultimate Flying Geese Tool. I love that it has different trimming sizes all on one ruler!
When using this tool, start with the Trim #1 side and line up the dashed line of the size you need to trim your Flying Geese to on the ruler with your seam. Trim on the right and the top.
Flip your Flying Geese block and also flip your ruler to the Trim #2 side. Again, line up the dashed line of the size you need to trim your Flying Geese to on the ruler with your seam. Trim on the right and the top.
