We’ve prepped all our sub blocks and it’s time to sew them all together! Lay out your sub blocks as shown in the pattern and make sure you pay attention to the orientation of the blocks so nothing gets flipped around.
TIP: Chain piecing will be your best friend here! It makes it go by so much faster. I chain piece all the rows and columns first, then chain piece the rows and columns to each other.
Matching Points: The trickiest part of this pattern is getting all your points to match up. To match up your HST and Flying Geese points, line up your seams and the folds of each block in the corner as shown below.
I recommend pinning your sub blocks together so they don’t shift when you sew. Press your seam open and there you go, a *perfect* point!
When sewing your rows and columns together, make sure your needle hits right at the tip where the points meet on the wrong side of your units so that your seam hits at that point as shown below. If you sew below the tip you will lose your point.
The last points you’ll have to match up on each block are when sewing your rows and columns to your Economy Blocks. To do this, make sure you line up the tips of your Flying Geese to the tips of your Economy Blocks as shown below and pin them together. Again, make sure your needle hits right at the tip of the point so that your seam hits at that point as shown below.
Once you have all your blocks made, press and have them ready for our last step, assembling our quilt tops!
To be eligible for this week’s prize, post a photo to Instagram of your finished Lava Blooms blocks by 8pm PST on February 27th and use the hashtag #LavaBloomsQuiltSA in your caption! A winner will be randomly chosen on February 28th! Remember that your account must be public to participate.
P.S. Next week is catch up week so there won’t be a blog post. Get all your blocks made assembled and pressed so we can put our quilt top together in the final week!
I can't wait to see all your pretty blocks!
Sylvia
